• Applicants from non-EU countries can enter Germany with Opportunity Card (“Chancenkarte”) for employment .

  • Applicants are guaranteed a 12-month stay in Germany through the Opportunity Card in order to look for a job.

  • If you receive an employment contract or a binding job offer for qualified employment during your stay, you can obtain a follow-up Opportunity Card or another residence permit

  • A points system is used to determine whether you are eligible for the Opportunity Card based on your qualifications, knowledge and circumstances. A minimum score of six points is required for this.

Requirements
  • Sufficient financial means to cover your living expenses for the duration of your stay in Germany.

  • To apply as a skilled worker: University degree or vocational qualification obtained or recognised in Germany.

  • To apply on a points basis:

    • Completion of a degree or at least two years of vocational training that is recognised by the state in which it was obtained.

    • German language skills at least at level A1 or English language skills at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Scoring System

If the basic requirements listed above are fulfilled and there is no direct qualification as a skilled worker, the required minimum score of six points can be obtained via the following criteria in order to receive the Opportunity Card

  1. Partial recognition of a foreign educational qualification

  2. Qualification in a shortage occupation

  3. Professional experience

  4. Language skills

  5. Age

  6. Relation to Germany
